‘all ready to feel old? The classic baseball flickA League Of Their Owncame out 25 years ago. Ouch. Okay, now that youve stared mortality in the face, lets get into it. The 1992 movie, which follows the Hinson sisters’ adventures in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (which was a real-life organization) during WWII, was a runaway hit, grossing more than $100 million at the box office. The story tackled gender stereotypes, sports history, and complicated family dynamics, all without batting a mascara’d eyelash.
Despitethe fact that the players were required to play in skirts (and lipstick!), the movie is a feminist touchstone. Directed by Penny Marshall, one of the few heavy-hitting female directors of the ’80s, A League of Their Own passes the Bechdel Test with flying colors.
The movie stars Geena Davis, a baby-faced Tom Hanks, Lori Petty, Rosie ODonnell, and Madonna in the absolute height of her fame. The female-heavy, all-star cast disproved the notion that women cant be funny, and helped earn League its place as one of the best American sports comedies of all time.
So what have these lady trailblazers been doing since 1992? Lets take a look:
The reigningQueen of Pop joined the cast as “All the Way” Mae Mordabito soon afterthe release of her first “best of” compilation,The Immaculate Collection. She also recorded an original song for the movie called “This Used To Be My Playground,” which topped the charts on the Billboard Hot 100.
Madonna is known as the queen of reinvention for a reasonher last album, Rebel Heart, was released in 2015. In addition to her slammin’ pop, Queen Madge continued acting after her success in A League of Their Own. Her most notable role was her turn as Eva Pern, Argentina’s controversial first lady, in 1996’sEvita.
Geena Davis (Then)
Geena Davis had already received a Best Actress Oscar nomination anda Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination before she played the role of Dottie Hinson, for which she was also nominated forBest Supporting Actress. How’s that for impressive?
Her audition for the role was actually a game of catch with Penny Marshall’s backyard. Marshall already intended to case Davis as Dottie Hinson, but she told USA Today that sheneeded to know if Davis could throw and catch a ball.
